Vintage South American Indian Painting by Antonio Marcos Gomez

Vintage South American Indian Painting by Antonio Marcos Gomez

I really love this piece. When I first found it, buried amongst a stack of mediocre paintings and prints, the aged burlap frame was water stained and ragged. The framer reframed it with new burlap and cleaned up the back. Known as the Western American Master Painter, this Marco Antonio Gomez painting is a portrayal of South American indigenous life. Born in 1910, the Southwest cowboy artist's work has been estimated to sell up to $7,000 per painting.

The painting was most likely painted in the 40's or 50's. Most of Gomez's work illustrates more traditional western themes with lot's of cowboys and horses on the open range. Gomez stretched out of his comfort zone to depict these indigenous Indians of South America. I suspect it's Argentina or Peru, clearly another epoch in time. Please note the volcano in the background and the costumes they wear. Gomez migrated from Mexico with his family and moved to Arizona in 1918. While most of his paintings were made with oil paint, this particular one seems to be acrylic.

It's a beautiful piece. Quiet, contemplative and serene. At least we think so here at Hunter Gatherer.

It measures 17 inches in length by 2 feet wide. It's just been re-framed, keeping the integrity of the original framing with fresh, textured linen and a clean back, new wire and fresh eye hooks.
