The Spaniards were a massive influence in Peru and South America, which had a ripple effect on everything including religion, architecture and and yes, furnishings. Colonization spread quickly throughout the country despite the difficulty of the challenging geography and institutions and homes were built, swayed aesthetically by the meandering conquistadores.
This trunk and mirror reflects that influence. When I found it I was told it was more than 300 years old. I’m not sure about that, but perhaps it is, at least 180 years old? The original mirror has since been replaced, alas, as I do love old mirrors and some rehab has been given to a few spots underneath the trunk, so that the wheels can move more easily. It has a rustic quality that I find beautiful, not so refined as Spanish pieces.
