Antique Japanese Lacquered Black Box with Two Cranes

Antique Japanese Lacquered Black Box with Two Cranes

There is something about some of these, not all of these boxes, that amplify the artistic and poetic sensibilities at their core! This one, organic almost sensual in shape, the hand carved bone that shows off the detail of the two cranes nestled within the branches of a tree and flora while standing precariously on rocks, that have been etched in gold. Many of these boxes were made during the Meiji (Enlightened rule) period (1868-1912) although they have been traditonaly popular for centuries. I am not certain when this one was made, either way, it's beautiful.

This Japanese lacquer ware box is beautifully decorated with the cranes. For the Japanese, the crane or tsuru is considered a national treasure. The Japanese regard the crane as a symbol of good fortune and longevity because of its fabled life span of 1,000 years. It also represents fidelity, as Japanese cranes are known to mate for life. An impressive large size measuring 12" long by 12" wide by 4.5" high. In good vintage condition with a few small nicks which are not distracting and reflective of the age. A great piece for the box collector and a distinctive accent piece.
