The crescent moon has often been used in conjunction with the Madonna and signifies her glory and victory over time and space. Or to be more specific, victory over sin - sometimes depicting Mary standing on a globe combined with the crescent moon. Of course, the significance is very layered and as such, I am not a scholar so I can only imagine the complexities of the Virgin Mary.
